Fernando de Gama, un giovane "Soldato di Ventura" portoghese, salpò per l'Oriente nel tentativo di trovare un uomo che aveva assassinato suo padre e, con un po' di fortuna, come molti dei suoi compatrioti, di fare fortuna. Una violenta tempesta nell'Oceano Indiano rischiò di mandare all'aria i suoi piani quando, a bordo della nave, affondò. Unico sopravvissuto, fu naufragato su una spiaggia tropicale, per poi essere catturato da schiavisti arabi e portato ad Ayutthaya, nel regno del Siam, dove fu offerto in vendita come schiavo.
